I have one thousand, three hundred and eleventy two things I want to do before I die (roughly) whereas my other half can count all the things he wants to do on one hand. One of those things was to go to a shooting range and experience firing a gun.
Now before I go on, let me say this as a bit of a disclaimer: I am a HUGE advocate for better gun control and after firing one myself I can honestly say it only made me think the right to bear arms is an out dated and ridiculous law (more than I already did I mean).
Anyway back to the story.
So Jody has always wanted to go to a shooting range and he found one in Belmont just outside the Perth CBD. We pre-booked ahead of time and were told to bring some photo I.D or we wouldn't be allowed to take part.
We rolled up, completely unaware of what the experience was going to be like and paid $60 for a .22mm revolver with 50 bullets and $90 for a .9mm semi-automatic Beretta with 30 bullets. You are buzzed into the shooting range where you take a pair of ear muffs and eye glasses. Then you are shown to your cubicle where the gun is padlocked into place so can't cause yourself a mischief with it.
After a brief but thorough demonstration you are shown how to handle the gun, load it and fire it...Then it's all on you.
It was terrifying. The revolver wasn't to bad but the sheer power of the .9mm was enough for me to have one go and go nope. It's terrifying to think that people have these in their homes and carry them with them on the street. Nope. Nada. No.
I had a really good time at the complex and would probably go again as it was a great stress reliever but as to ever wanting to own a gun? Pass.
